Libreto escrito, aún no existe
In Libreto escrito, aún no existe, Natalia Lassalle-Morillo unravels the process of seven years of artistic collaboration between the artist and her mother, Gloria Morillo Cabán. Starting from the multi-channel film Retiro, where Lassalle-Morillo plays Gloria in a cinematographic reconstruction of her past, the exhibition is an intimate cinematic weaving of stories that interrogates perceptions of truth, fiction, and permanence. Presenting Retiro in its multi-channel format and two new collaborations between Lassalle Morillo and Morillo Cabán, Libreto escrito, aún no existe becomes a living archive of an extensive partnership between the artist and her mother. This exhibition considers the film creation process an active process that does not end with a final edit but continually changes with each presentation.
Staged in everyday domestic life, Retiro is a cinematic amalgam of stories. For Gloria, it is the simultaneous experience of re-directing her past; for Natalia, it is the process of embodying these recreations, directed by her mother, in real-time; and for both, it is a collaboration that seeks to unlearn the traumas inherited in her family. She speaks directly about the process of making a documentary: conversations, phone calls, trips to recording locations, coexistence, and the connections that the artist found as an active spectator, flowing between different social, political, and geographical environments. There is no interest in distinguishing truth and story, but rather an invitation to relate to history from the perspective of others, considering that fiction not only depends on who builds it but on who interprets it. Each presentation of this piece changes and responds to its context, reflecting the very act and experience of remembering.
