Carlos Martiel

Cuban artist born in 1989. Graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro (Havana), between 2008-2010 Martiel studied at the Cátedra Arte de Conducta, directed by the Cuban artist Tania Bruguera. A descendant of Haitian and Jamaican immigrants who emigrated to Holguín in the mid-1920s, Carlos Martiel was interested from a young age in questions related to his body, freedom in Cuba, the limits of what is permissible, the migratory experience, raciality, among others. He approaches these themes through performance as a means of empowerment.
